Tehri Dam has been constructed on the Bhagirathi river in Tehri Garhwal district of
Uttarakhand.
Bhilangana river flows into Bhagirathi at old Tehri before the site of Tehri dam.
The major objectives of the project are to impound floodwaters of the Bhagirathi and the
Bhilangana rivers into a large reservoir behind the dam, generation of hydroelectricity and
irrigation of agricultural land.
The project was cleared by the Planning Commission of India in 1972 but construction started
from 1978.
टिहरी बांध उत्तराखण्ड के टिहरी गढ़वाल जिले में भागीरथी नदी पर बनाया गया है।
टिहरी बांध के स्थल से पहले पुरानी टिहरी में भिलंगना नदी भागीरथी में मिलती है।
परियोजना के प्रमुख उद्देश्य भागीरथी और भिलंगना नदियों के बाढ़ के पानी को बांध के पीछे एक
बड़े जलाशय में रोकना, जलविद्युत का उत्पादन और कृषि भूमि की सिंचाई करना है।
परियोजना को 1972 में भारत के योजना आयोग द्वारा मंजूरी दी गई थी लेकिन निर्माण 1978 से शुरू
हुआ।
